Frederick Holmes was born in 1890 at Carlton Le Moorland, Newark, he was the only son of the late David an agricultural labourer and Rebecca Holmes née Scatliff of Carlton le Moorland, Newark.

His father David was born in 1839 at Normanby, Lincolnshire, he died in 1918 aged 80 yrs, his mother Rebecca Scatliff was born in 1850 at Carlton Le Moorland they were married in 1888 im the Newark registration district, they had a further child a daughter Fanny Holmes born 1890 at Carlton Le Moorland.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at Carlton Le Moorland, his father David 72 yrs is an agricultural labourer, he is living with his wife Rebecca 69 yrs.

Military history

Private Frederick Holmes enlisted at Carlton whilst residing at Nethefield, he initially served with the service number 36063 in the Yorkshire Regiment, he was serving with the 7 battalion Durham Light Infantry when he died on 13th April 1918. whilst a prioner of war .He is buried at Merville Communal cemetery extension, France.
