John Thomas Hallam was born in 1884 at Tupton, Derbyshire and live at Doe Lee, Chesterfield, Derbyshire he was the son of Jacob Hallam a colliery fireman and Harriett Hallam née Simons of Market Street, Claycross, Derbyshire.
His father Jacob was born in 1862 at Bradwell, Derbyshire, his mother was born in 1866 at Tupton, they were married on 26th March 1883 at North Wingfield, they had 5 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhod.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at Market Street, Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Jacob Hallam 49 yrs is a colliery fireman he is living with hs wfe Harriett 45 yrs and their children, Edward 18 yrs a coal miner and Marshall 6 yrs of age.
John Thomas married Lily Rogers (born 18th June 1887 bulwell), they lived at 71 Church Street, Cresswell and had two children, Joseph Marshall born 28th March 1906 and Edith Vera born 1st July 1908.
In the 1911 census the family lived at Doe Lea, Chesterfield John Thomas 27 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lilly 23 years old.
Commencing 26th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 19 shillings a week.
Lance Corporal John Thomas Hallam enlisted at Creswell whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, 13th August 1916. whilst working on a trench between, Bernafay and Trones Wood, France during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memoril.
His name is also commemorated on the Creswell village memorial, Derbyshire.
