Family history

George Cowling was born in 1890 at Grimsby he was the son of Arthur John an assurance superintendent and his first wife the late Annie Cowling née Ashby of 64 Conway Road Carlton Nottingham.

His father Arthur John was born in 1855 at Ripon, Yorkshire, his mother Annie Ashby was born in 1863 at Grimoldby, Lincolnshire, she died in 1902 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 21st September 1878 at Ripon, they went on to have 8 children.

Following his first wife's death his father remarried Fanny Wiles (born 1863 at Grimoldby, Lincolnshire ) in 1902 at Louth Lincolnshire.

In the 1911 census his family are living at 47 Main Street East, Carlton, Nottingham, Arthur John Cowling 56 yrs is an assurance superintendent, he is living with his second wife Fanny 48 yrs and their children, Minnie 18 yrs and May 16 yrs of age.

In the same 1911 census we find at George is with the Army, he is in barracks at Lincln with his battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment, he is 21 yrs of age single and is a Private.

Military history

Private George Cowling enlisted at Lincoln on 23rd June 1911 whilst residing at Carlton, giving his age as 22 yrs and 2 months he was a dairyman, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment landing in France on 5th November 1914 and was killed in action on 27th Febraury 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
