Ernest Clay was born in 1893 at Alfreton, he was the son of Frederick a shoeing smith and Sarah Ann Clay née Hemstock of Independent Hill, Alfreton.
His father Frederick was born in 1867 at Alfreton,his mother Sarah Ann Hemstock was also born in 1867 at Alfreton, they were married on 22nd May 1888 at Shirland, Derbyshire, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 6 Independent Hill, Alfreton, Frederick 44 yrs is a shoeing smith, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 44 yrs and their children, Frederick Arthur 21 yrs a shoeing smith, Ernest18 yrs a colliery gang lad below ground, Sidney 13 yrs a shoe smith striker, Mary Lillian 12 yrs, Walter Reginald 10 yra and Hilda 8 yrs old.
Ernest married Elizabeth Unwin (born 24th October 1891 ) in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 30 Belvoir Street, Mapperley, Nottingham.
Commencing 26th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence.
Lance Corporal Ernest Clay enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, during the attack near Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.
