Family history

Thomas James Chantry was born in 1897 at Derby and lived at 17 Markheaton Street, Derby.he was the son of the late Peter a labourer and Hannah Chantrey nee Carding of 5, Mount Pleasant, Carlton, Nottingham.

His father Peter was born in 1851 at Blidworth he died in 1901 aged 50 yrs, his mother Hannah Carding was born in 1860 at Derby, they were married on 21st September 1879 at Christ Church, Derby they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In he 1911 census the family are living at 46 Eagle Street, Derby, his wisowed mother Hannah Chantry is 51 yrs of age she is living with her children, Alice Bertha 24 yrs a paper porter, Thomas James 14 yrs an errand boy and Annie Elizabeth 12 yrs old.

Military history

Private Thomas James Chantry enlisted at Derby on 9th December 1915 he was 19 years and 2 months old, he and lived at 17 Markheaton Street, Derby he was a cleaner, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and went to France on 4th October 1917. He was was killed in action, 18th October 1917, aged 21, whilst in the line near Zillebeke, Belgium. He is buried : Vichte Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 4, Row C. Grave 6.
