AugustusWilliam Henry Barber known as 'Gus' was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Augustus John a french polisher and Mary Ellen Barber née Millson and the brother of Dorothy Ellen, Ethel May, Nellie Evelin and Lillian Ivy Barber.

His father Augustus John was born in 1878 at Shepshed, Leicestershire, his mother Mary Ellen Millson was born in 1879 at Nottingham, they were married on 2nd April 1898 at Saviors Church, Nottingham, they had 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 Plains Road Mapperley Nottingham, Augustus John 33 yrs is a french polisher, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 32 yrs and their children, Augustus William 12 yrs a scholar, Dorothy Ellen 9 yrs, Ethal May 8 yrs of age, Nellie Evelyn 5 yrs and Lillian Ivy 3 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Augustus Barber enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Royal Fusilier, he was reported missing since 27 March 1918 and reported killed on that date in February 1919. He is buried at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France.
