Family history

William John Young was born in 1887 at Radcliffe on Trent , he was the son of the late William Thivenall Young a house painter and Rebecca Young néé Morley.

His father was born in 1848 at St Ives, Huntingdon,he died in 1908 at Sleaford, he was 60 yrs of age, his mother Rebecca Morley was born in 1867 at Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, they were maried on 30th July 1883 at St Johns church Spittlegate, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 9 children.

In 1901, William John lived on Mount Pleasant, Radcliffe on Trent, with his father William, 53, a house painter, mother Rebecca (née Morley), 33, and siblings Fanny M. 16, a lace worker, Arthur 4 yrs Annie M. 11, Edward B. 10, Bertha, 8, and Samuel T. 1

By 1911 William John's father had died and the family, which included Hilda Young 9, lived with Rebecca’s second husband George Whittaker and their children Florence and George at 70 Manvers Street, Netherfield, Nottinghamshire.

In the same 1911 census William John has left the family home, he is boarding at 42 Forester Street, Netherfield, he is shown as being 23 yrs old and is a set weigher in a cotton doubling mill, he is living with Mary Sumner 42 yrs and her children.

Military history

Lance Corporal William John Young enlisted at Carlton, Nottingham whilst residing at Netherfield he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 12th July 1917 and is buried at Mount Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.

William John's brother Arthur Young was killed in action 14/8/1917 serving with 2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment.
