John William Westwood was born in 1897 at Blackwell, Derbyshire he was the son of George Henry Westwood a goods gaurd and Kate Elizabeth Westwood née Church and the brother of Ada Florence and Amy Westwood of Nottingham.

His father George Henry was born in 1872 at Horninglow, Staffordshire, his mother Kate Elizabeth Church was born in 1874 at Wellingborough, Nothamptonshire, they were married on 6th September 1896 at All Saints Church, Wellingborough, they had 3 children.

In the 1911 census the family were lodging at 43 Cremorne Street Meadows Nottingham they are lodging with Priscilla Leverton 40 yrs and her family, George Henry is 38 yrs and is a goods guard, he is living with his children, John William 14 yrs no occupation listed, Ada Florence 11 yrs a scholar and Amy 9 yrs of age.

Military history

Sergeant John William Westwood enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Nottingham, he served with 'D' Coy 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 6th May 1917, he is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France
