Herbert Twells was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of Sarah Twells.

In 1911 they lived at 4 Sanderson Street Pym Street St Ann's Nottingham.

In the 1911 census Herbert has left the family home, he is living at Glebe Farm Wilford, Nottingham, he is shown as being 19 yrs a general farm labourer, he is living with Edward Taylor 55 yrs a farmer.

Herbert married Ellen Elizabeth Fox (born 14th April 1895) they were married in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 49 Shrewsbury Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottigham.

Commencing 5th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

She married William H Francis in 1919 and they lived at 6 Grove Street Nottingham Road Mansfield.

Military history

Gunner Herbert Twells enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 298th Siege Bty Royal Garrison Artillery, he was killed in action on 27th April 1917, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery,
