Maurice Stapleton was born in 1893 at Basford, he was the son of Walter Stapleton a hosiery trimmer and the late Theodocia Stapleton, née Brown of High Street, Basford, Nottingham.
His father Walter was born in 1850 at Basford, his mother Theodocia Brown was born in 1856 at Basford, she died in 1902 aged 46 yrs, they were married in 1874 atNottingham they went on to have 12 children. sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood,
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 144 High Street, Basford, Walter 60 yrs a widow anda hosiery trimmer is living with his children Sam 20 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Lottie 15 yrs a cigarette packer, Cecil Bernard 13 yrs acoal miner door trapper, and his married daughter Mabel Annie 22 yrs and herhusband Harold Turner 23 yrs a coal miner and their ctwo children, Gwendoline Frances 1 year and Madge Mable 5 months old.
In the same 1911 census Maurice has lef the family home he is lodgings at Basford Nottingham 105 Whitemoor Road, Old Basford, he is shown as being 18 years and is a coal miner.he is living with Walter Sturgess 36 yrs a chapel caretaker and his wife Emily
Private Maurice Stapleton enlisted at Aberdare, Glamorgan, he served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in the Balkans on 15th October 1915, he was killed in action on 7th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Ypres.
