Family history

William Clemence Mitchell was born in 1898 at Basford, Nottingham, baptised on 11th September 1898 at St Augustine Church, New Basford, he was the son of William a lace maker and Annie Maria Mitchell née Cragg and the brother of Leslie and Gladys Mitchell. of 198 Noel Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1872 at Basford, his mother Annie Maria Cragg was born in 1875 at Lincoln, they were married on 15th August 1896 at St Augustine Church, New Basford, they had 5 children,sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 17 Suez Street Basford Nottingham, William 39 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Annie 36 yrs and their children, William 12 yrs a scholar, Leslie 9 yrs and Gladys 7 yrs of age.

Military history

Private William Clemence Mitchell enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 27th March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
