Donald Herbert McAllister was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Herbert William a foundry labourer, and Gertrude McAllister née Spick and the brother of Daisy McAllister.
His father Herbert William was born in 1875 at Aston, Yorkshire, his mother Gertrude Spick was born in 1874 at Newark, they were married on 22nd September 1894 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Daisy born 1896 at Colwick
In the 1911 census the family lived at 15 Queen's Grove The Meadows Nottingham Herbert 36 yrs is afoundry labourer he is living with his wife Gertrude 37 yrs and their children, Daisy 15 yrs a shop assistant for a fruiterer and Donald 13 yrs a scholar.
Private Donald Herbert Mcallister enlisted at Nottingham, he seved with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 17, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
