Family history

Arthur Brown was born in 1887 at Kirkby in Ashfield, he was the son of the late Thomas a coal miner and Hannah Brown née Cartlidge, of 36 Byron Street, East Kirkby.

His father Thomas was born in 1850 at Holbrook, Derbyshire, he died in 1905 aged 55 yrs, his mother Hannah Cartlidge was born in 1859 at Swanwick, Derbyshire, they were married in 1877 at the Baptist Chapel, Swanwick, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Hannah 54 yrs is living at 36 Byron Street, East Kirkby she is shown as Hannah 54 yrs a widow, she is living with her 6 children.

Arthur Brown married Mary Matilda Wright (born 18th February 1892) they were married on 24th December 1910 at St Thomas Church, Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at 43 Byron Street, Kikrkby in Ashfield, they had a daughter Rose Hannah born 5th August 1911.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 43 Byron Street, Kirkby in Ashfied, Arthur 23 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Matilda 18 yrs .

They later lived at they lived at 28 Oxford Street, Bulwell,

Commencing 14th May 1917 his widow Mary was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

His widow re married on 19th January 1918 to Ernest Bettison.

Military history

Private Arthur Brown enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Bulwell he was killed in action, 25th October 1916, whilst serving in the line at Sanctuary Wood near Ypres, Belgium.

Buried : Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), Belgium. Plot 6. Row O. Grave 21.
