John Gilbert Townsend was born in 1872 at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, he was the son of Henry a painter and plumber and his first wife Jane Townsend, néé Heiron of Cirencester,
His father Henry was born in 1843 at Cirencester, his mother Jane Heiron was born in 1844 at Minchinhamton, Gloucester, she died in 1894 at Cirencester she was 50 yrs of age, they were married on 19th Janurary 1867 they went on to have 10 children.
Following the death of his mother his father remarried on 29th April 1899 at Cirencester to Mary Sheppard (born 1861 at Corsham, Wiltshire,
In the 1911 census his parents were living at 3 Ashcroft Road, Cirencester, Gloucester, Henry 68 yrs is a painter and plumber he is living with his second wife Mary Townsend 50 yrs.
John Gilbert was the husband of Alice Maud Yates (born 22nd July 1875) they were married on 12th January 1898 at St Ann's parish church Nottingham, they lived at 42 Radcliffe Road West Bridgford Nottingham they had the following children, Gilbert Edward born 189, Henry Terrence 19th February 1905, Violet Maud born 19th November 1906, Frederick born 9th February 1909 and Gwendoline born 10th June 1911.
In the 1911 census John Gilbert was living at Tourney Barracks, Aldershot, he is 38 yrs and is a Sergeant in 2nd battalion Royal Irish Regiment his wife Alice Maud 35 yrs is also living at the barracks with her children, Gilbert Edward 12 yrs, Henry Terence 6 yrs, Violet Maud 4 yrs and Frederick 2 yrs of age.
Commencing 4th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 31 shillings and 3 pence a week.
Sergeant John Gilbert Townsend enlisted in London prior to 1911 he served with the 4th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, he died of heart failure at Cork, Ireland on 8th September 1916, he is buried at Cobh old Cemetery, Cork, Ireland.
