Frederick William Smith was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur Edwin a cotton porter and Annie Maria Smith née Golding of 9 Mary Terrace Crocus Street Meadows Nottingham.
His father Arthur Edwin Smith was born in 1864 at Nottingham, his mother Annie Maria Golding was born in 1861 at Poplar, London, they were married in 1887 at Nottingham, they had 3 children,
In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Newthorpe Street, Nottingham, Arthur 47 yrs is a cotton porter, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs a cotton winder and their children, Frederick 23 yrs a sinkers buffer in the iron trade, Percival 18 yrs an electrical engineers porter and Arthur 12 yrs a scholar.He was the son of Arthur Edwin and Annie Maria Smith of 9 Mary Terrace Meadows Nottingham.
A notice of his death which appeared in the local paper gave his address as 13 Sunny Terrace, (-) Grove, Nottingham.
Private Frederick William Smith enlisted at Nottinham, he initially served witht he service number 4442 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he later served with the 115th Company Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action on 26th May 1917, he is buried in Ferme-Olivier Cemetery (grave ref. Plot 3. Row D. Grave 8.)
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 9 June 1917: 'Smith. Killed in action Private Frederick Smith, Machine Gun Corps, age 29, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Smith, 9 Mary Terrace.'
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 June 1917: 'Private F Smith, Machine Gun Corps, 13 Sunny Terrace, (-) Grove, Nottingham, killed in action May 24th (sic), age 29 (sic).'
His brother Private Percy Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th September 1917 in France, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Belgium.
