Walter Shirley was born on 4th February 1899 at Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, he was the son of John Thomas a locomtive engine driver and Alice Shirley née Kinder of 80 Wilford Grove Meadows Nottingham.
His father John Thomas was born in 1867 at Stapenhill, Derbyshire, his mother Alice Kinder was born in 1868 at Wing, Rutland, they were married on 6th August 1893 at St Leonards Church, Shroeditch, London, they went on to have 6 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Ash Street, Burton on Trent, John Thomas 44 yrs is locomotive engine driver, he is living with his wie Alice 43 yrs and their children, Anne Elizabeth 19 yrs a chevener, Henry 15 yrs, Walter 12 yrs, Albert 10 yrs and Edith 7 yrs of age.
Aircraftman 2nd class Walter Shirley enlisted and served with the 63rd Sqdn, Royal Air Force, he died on 26th June 1919 in Mesopotamia and is buried at Tehran War Cemetery.
