Family history

William Rivers was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick a confextioner and Emma Rivers née Gell and the brother of Lydia and Frederick Rivers.

His father Frederick was born in 1856 at Dedham, Essex, his mother Emma Gell was born in 1860 at Riddings, Derbyshire, they were married on 9th November 1879 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at Granby Villas, Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford Nottingham. Frederick 55 yrs is a confectioner, he is living with his wife Emma 51 yrs and their childre, Frederick 55 yrs is a confectioner he is living withhis wife Emma 51 yrs and sister in law, Lydia Gell 41 yrs and their children, Frederick 31 yrs a clerk and William 29 yrs a cabinet maker.

Military history

Lance Corporal William Rivers enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at West Bridgford, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 28th June 1915. he was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Commemorated : Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
