Family history

James Alfred Preston was born on 15th November 1896 at Derby, he was the son of the late Alfred a railway clerk and Mary Emma Preston née Williamson of 83 Chaworth Road West Bridgford Nottingham.

His father Alfred was born in 1876 at Clamaltha, Tipperary, Ireland his mother Mary Ann Williamson was born in 1866 at Derby, they were married on 1st September at St Peters Church, Derby, they had a further child Lexcey Edith Preston born 1899 at Derby.

In the 1911 census the family are living with his father and grandfather at 13 Industrial Street, Derby, James Williamson 65 yrs a tin plate worker and is living with his wife Mary Ann Williamson 67 yrs and their daughter Edith Williamson 42 yrs a dyers shop assistant, and his son in law Alfred Preston 35 yrs a railway clerk and his wife Mary Ann Preston 43 yrs and their children, James Frank Preston 14 yrs an apprentice french polisher (grandson) and Lexcey Preston, 11 yrs a scholar (grandaughter)

Military history

Private James Frank Preston enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Derby, he served with the 1/3rd Bn Royal Fusiliers London Regiment, landing in Egypt on 19th April 1915, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916 in France , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

His father Private Alfred Preston enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Derby, he served initially with the service number 32272 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment,) having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
