Family history

Alfred Preston was born on 13th November 1876 at Clamaltha, Tipperary, Ireland, he was the son of the late John Preston a gardener and his second wife Priscilla Coward of Marylebone, London.

His father John Preston was born in 1837 at Swithland, Leicestershire, he died in 1876 in Derbyshire he was 39 yrs of age, his mother Priscilla Coward was born in 1840 at Kilmington, Somerset , they were married on 4th April 1874 at St James Church, Middlesex, they had 7 children.

His father was first married to Ann Storer born 1836 at Derby they were married on 8th April 1855 at St Alkmunds Church, Derby they had 5 chidren.

Alfred Preston was the husband of Mary Emma Williamson (born 10th May 1867 Derby ) they were married on 1st September 1896 at St Peters Church, Derby, they lived at 83 Chatsworth Road West Bridgford Nottingham,

Commencing 4th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week increasing to 25 shillings on 1st May 1918, at this date she was living at 4 West Cottages, Alfreton Road,Derby.

Military history

Private Alfred Preston enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Derby, he served initially with the service number 32272 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment,) having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

His son Private James Frank Preston enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Derby, he served with the 1/3rd Bn Royal Fusiliers London Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
