William Alfred Oliver was born in 1887 at Nether Broughton, Leicestershire, he was the son of John Oliver a labourer and Janet Oliver née Clarke

His father John was born in 1847 at Barrow upon Soar, his mother Janet Clark was born in 1861 at Wymondham, Leicestershire, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, and had 2 further children, John Thomas born 1884, Frederick Duncan 1886 .

He was boarding at 7 Federick Raod, Stapleford, Nottingham in the 1911.census he is shown as William Oliver 23 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with John William Eyles 36 yrs a blast furnace labourer and his family

Military history

Private William Alfred Oliver enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, he landed in France on 10th July 1915, he was killed in action on 25th September 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
