Charles William Lancashire Smith was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Charles a bricklayers labourer and Sarah Ann Smith née Helener of 47 Bathley Street, Nottingham

His father Charles was born in 1869 at Nottingham, his mother Sarah Ann Helener was born in 1876 at Nottingham, they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 47 Bathley Street, Nottingham, Charles Smith 42 yrs is a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 35 yrs and their 2 children, Charles William Smith 16 yrs a tailor and Lily 2 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Charles William Lancashire Smith enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 1st April 1917 at 5th casualty clearing station, France aged 22 yrs, he is buried in Bray Military Cemetery, France Plot 2. Row E. Grave 54.
