Family history

Walter East was born in 1882 at Lincoln, he was the son of the late Henry Charles a time and store keeper, and Catherine East née Foster of Newland Lincoln.

His father Henry Charles was born in 1850 at Lincoln he died in 1915 aged 65 yrs, his mother Catherine Foster was born in 1844 at Calverton they were married in 1872 at Lincoln, they had 7 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents were living at 191 Winn Street, Lincoln, Henry Charles is 61 yrs a time and stock keeper, he is living with his wife Catherine 67 yrs.

Walter was the husband of Florence Elizabeth Hodges (born 5th March 1884 ) they were married in 1906 at Lincoln they lived at 17 Melbourne Road West Bridgford Nottingham they had 2 children. Walter Edward born 25th April 1908 and Florence Nellie born 13th April 1912.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Milman Road, Lincoln, Walter 29 yrs is a compositor, he is living with his wife Florence Elizabeth 27 yrs and their son Walter Edward 2 yrs.

Commencing 3rd March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private Walter East was called up on 23rd September 1916 at Ilkeston giving his address as 17 Melbourne Road, West Bridgford, he was 34 yrs and 5 months old, he was a compositor, his next of kin was his wife Florence Elizabeth of the same address, he was posted to the East Riding Yeomanry with the service number 50949. He landed in France on 28th March 1917 and was transferred to the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment on 26th June 1918, he died of wounds on 24th August 1918, at the 53rd General Hospital, Boulogne, he is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille
