John Alfred Clayton was born in 1884 at Nottingham, he was the husband of Hilda Mary Shaw born 1889 at Bulcote Nottinghamshire. They married on 8th June 1908 at St Georges Church, West Bridgford, Nottingham and went on to have a son Stanley Frederick Clayton who was born in 1910.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 185 Exchange Road West Bridgford John Alfred 27 yrs is a compositor, he is living with his wife Hilda Mary 22 yrs and their son Stanley Frederick Clayton 1 year old.
Hilda later lived at 25 Willoughby Street Beeston.
He served with 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters as a private with service number 2236. He was then commissioned on 17th December 1917 and served with the 6th Battalion he died on 5th March 1919 he is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
