Family history

Charles Henry Challans was born in 1897 at Mapperley he was the son of Edward a brickmaker and Mary Ann Challans née Marsden of 6, Ainsworth Terrace, Hawthorn Street, Meadows, Nottingham.

His father Edward Challans was born in 1875 at Mapperley his mother Mary Ann Marsden was born in 1876 at Nottingham, they were married in 1896 at Basford, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Ainsworth Terrace, Hawthorn Street, Nottingham, Edward head of the family 36 yrs and married is living with his children, Charles Henry 14 yr working in printers factory, Baden Edward 10 yrs, Frederick Albert 9 yrs also living with the family is Alice Starbuck 30 yrs a house keeper.

Military history

Private Charles Henry Challans enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 8th September 1914, he was killed in action on 20th October 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial
