Family history

Samuel Brown (junior) was born on 31st October 1885 at Hulme, Manchester he was baptised on 29th November 1885 at St Marys Church, Hulme, Manchester, he was the son of Samuel Brown (senior) and Catherine (Minnie) Brown née Devine of Manchester.

His father Samuel (senior) was born in 1857 at Hulme, his mother Catherine Devine was born in 1858 at Ardwick, Manchester, they were married on 22nd December 1878 at St Pauls Church, Hulme, they went on to have 17 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 60 Derby Street, Hulme, Manchester Samuel Brown (senior) 53 yrs is a knocker up, he is living with his wife Catherine 52 yrs and their children, William 20 yrs a carter, George 17 ys a gardener, Eva 16 yrs a bookbinder, Blanche 11 yrs a scholar and Ellen 7 yrs of age.

Samuel Brown (junior) married Elizabeth Jane Smith (born 23rd January 1887) they were married on 11th June 1908 at St Silas Church, Ardwick, Manchester. they lived at 154 Spotland Road, Rochdale.

His widow did not qualify for a pension as she remarried on 12h April 1915 to become Mrs Long, before the pension was awarded.

Military history

Sergeant Samuel Brown enlisted at Manchester whilst residing at West Brigford, Nottingham, he served with the 2/6th battalion Manchester Regiment, he was killed in action on 22nd July 1917 he is buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Extra information

Two of his brothers also served and died in the 'Great War'

John Brown born 1889 Hulme, was killed in action in France on 26th October 1917 he served with the Royal Field Artillery,

George Brown born 1897 Hulme was killed in action on 26th August 1918 he served with the 1/5th battalion Lancashire Regiment.
