John Ernest (Jack) was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a brewer and Elizabeth Brown née Glazebrook and the brother of Edith Elizabeth, Gertrude Ellen and William Richard Brown of 21 Bell Street, Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1855 at Bingham, Nottinghamshire, his mother Elizabeth Culley Glazebrook was born in 1856 at Lowdham, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 88 Holgate Road, Nottingham, Wiliam 56 yrs is a brewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 55 yrs and their children, Edith Elizabeth 31 yrs an overlooker in chemistry, Gertrude Ellen 29 yrs aa stationary folder, William Richard 25 yrs a carver and guilder, and John Ernest Brown 23 yrs a time and stock keeper.
John Ernest Brown married Harriett Middleton (born 27th April 1890) on 26th August 1911 at St Faiths Church North Wilford, Nottingham, they lived at 18 Thoresby Ave, Sneinton, they had a daughter Maggie Irene born 21st July 1915.
Commencing 31st December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private John Ernest Brown enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 28th April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
