Family history

Alfred Whitehead (junior) was born in 1894 at Ilkeston, he was the son of Alfred Whitehead
(senior) and Emma Elizabeth Whitehead néé Rossington of 29 Edgware Road Bulwell Nottingham.

His father Alfred Whitehead (senior) was born in 1874 at Dewsbury,Yorkshire his mother Emma Elizabeth Rossington was born in in 1876 at Whitterton , Lancashire, they were married in 1893 at Basford, Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 194 Little Hallam Lane, Ilkeston Alfred (senior) 37 yrs is a coal miner roadman, he is living with his wife Emma Elizabeth 35 yrs and their 8 children including Alfred 17 yrs an iron pipe maker in an iron works.

Military history

Lance Corporal Alfred Whitehead enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 11th battalion, Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 8th October 1918 he is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery Gouy
