Family history

Herbert Thomas Wells was born in 1888 at Ickleford, Hertfordshire, he was the son of William Wells a water cress grower and Mary Wells, née Groom.

His father William was born in 1841 at Whitwell, Hertfordshire, his mother Mary A Groom was born in 184 at Paulwarden, Hertfordshire, they were married in 1866 at Hitchen, Hertfordshire, they had 10 children.

Herbert Thomas was the husband of Mildred Constance Day (born 19th August 1892 at Ickleford, Hertfordshire, ) they were married on 5th March 1910 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, Nottingham, they lived at 72 Bailey Street Old Basford Nottingham they had a daughter Mabel Wells born 29th March 1916

In the 1911 census Herbert Thomas 22 yrs a coal miner is living at 15 Bailey Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, he is living with his wife Mildred Constanc 20 yrs and his brother Alfred Wels 30 yrs a farm labourer and his sister in law Ellen Wells 28 yrs,

Commencing 11th August 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private Herbert Thomas Wells enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 13th March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
