Family history

James Aston Ward was born on 15th July 1884 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 26th January 1885 at St Ann's Parish Church, Nottingham, he was the son of William a joiner builder and Hannah Maria Ward née Moss of 50 Hawkridge Street, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1856 at Nottingham, his mother Hannah Maria Ross was born in 1854 at Bolingbroe, Lincolnshire, they were married on 23rd Decemebr 1879 at Miningsby,Lincolnshire they went on to have 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 50 Hawkridge Street,, Nottingham, William Ward 59 yrs is a joiner builder, he is living with his wife Hannah Maria 57 yrs old.

James Aston married Mabel Wilkinson (born 23rd December 1887) they were married in 1910 at Basford, they went on to have daughter Constance Mabel born 21st February 1911 they lived at 136 Woodbouh Road, Nottingham,

In the 1911 census the family are living at 136 Woodborough Road, Nottingham, James Aston 26 yrs is a news agent, he is living with his wife Mabel 24 yrs and their daughter Constance Mabel 1 month old.

The family later lived at 11 Meadow Cottages , Netherfield, Nottingham.

Commencing 5th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

His widow remarried on 24th July 1918 to John Betts they lived at 99 Henrietta Street, Bulwell.

Military history

Private James Aston Ward enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 25th February 1915 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
