Samuel Vickerstaff was born on 17th June 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of John a basket maker and Marie Ellen Vickerstaff née Brown of 65 Monsall Street New Basford Nottingham.

His father John Vickerstaff was born in 1870 at Nottingham, his mother Marie Ellen Brown was born in 1871 at Basford, Nottingham, they were married on 5th September 1891 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, they had 7 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

Inthe 1911 census the family are living at 65 Monsall Street, New Basford, Nottingham John Vickerstaff 41 yrs is a basket maker in a wicker works, he is living with his wife Marie Ellen 39 yrs and their children, Samuel 16 yrs no occupation listed , Annie 14 yrs, Gerty 10 yrs, John William 7 yrs of age and Ernest 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Samuel Vickerstaff enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 24th October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
