Family history

Joseph Tomlinson was born in 1879 at Cinderhill, he was the son of John Thomas a coal miner hewer and Eliza Ann Tomlinson née Holroyd of 31 Vernon Road, Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham.

His father John Tomlinson was born in 1863 at Codnor, Derbyshire, his mother Eliza Ann Holroyd was born in 1861 at Cinderhill, they were married on 5th August 1883 at St Leodegarius Church Basford, they went on to have 6 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood their 2 other surviving children were William Henry born 1885 and Alice born 1892.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 31 Vernon Road, East Kirkby, Nottingham, John Thomas 48 yrs is a coaminr, he is living with his wife Ann 50 yrs and their grandson Jack 6 months old.

He was the husband of Esther Parker (born 1881) of 55 North Gate Basford Nottingham they were married on 8th July 1901 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, they had 4 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving 2 children were Gladys born 1902 and William Henry born 1907.

In the 1911 census they are living at 7 Alpine Street, Basford, Joseph is 30 yrs he is a lace dresser he is living with his wife Esther 28 yrs and their children, Gladys 9 yrs and Williiam Henry 4 yrs of age, also living at the address are 3 adult lodgers.

Military history

Driver Jospeh Tomlinson enlisted at Nottingham, he served with'A' Bty 277th Bde, Royal Field Artillery, he died on 4th March 1919 he is buried at Houghin British Cemetery, France.
