Private Samuel Smith enlisted at Carlton, Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 2025 in the North Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 18th October 1916, whilst serving with the 1st battalion East Lancashire regiment his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
