Family history

John Henry Smith was born on 1st May 1896 at Eckington, Derbyshire, he was baptised on 1st June 1896 at Eckington, he was the son of Albert a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Ann Smith née Waring of 4 Fitzroy Terrace Milton Street Bulwell Nottingham.

His father Albert was born in 1872 at Cotmanhay, his mother Elizabeth Ann Waring was born in 1874 at Eckington they were married on 25th December 1895 at Eckington, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 39 Kett Street, Bulwell, Albert 39 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 37 yrs and their 10 children, including John Henry 14 yrs a pottery hand for a pottery manufacturer.

Military history

Rifleman John Henry Smith enlisted at Nottingham,on 29th December 1914 giving his date of birth as 1st May 1896,he was 18 yrs and 243 days old, he was a coal miner hewer. he served with the 9th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps,landing in France on 29th June 1915, he was killed in action on 9th April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
