Family history

Arthur Smith was born in 1896 at Whatton in the Vale, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of Thomas a coal carter and Mary Jane Smith née Osborn of Rose Tree Cottage, Lydiate Ash, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

His father Thomas was born in 1870 at Whatton, his mother Mary Jane Oborn was born in 1863 at Cottesmore, Rutland, they were married in 1890 at Oakham, Rutland, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Wicklow Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, Thomas 41 yrs is a coal carter, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 48 yrs and their children, Edith Ellen 20 yrs a lace mender and Arthur 15 yrs an apprentice butcher.

Military history

Private Arthur Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 80333 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) He was killed in action on 10th September 1918 whilst serving with the 1st battalion East Lancashire Regiment he is buried at Rue-Du-Bois, Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
