Family history

John Nicholson was born in 1876 at Haswell, Durham, he was the son of John a coal miner and Eliza Nicholson née Cummings of 274 High Street Basford Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1845 at Shotton, Durham, his mother Eliza Cummings was born in 1845 at Thornley, Durham, they were married on 13th June 1863 at Houghton Le Spring, Durham, they went on to have 9 children.

John married Elizabeth Burns born 16th November 1877 they were married on 28th May 1898 at the parish church at Southwick Durham, they had 2 children, Margaret Ann born 1899 and John Joseph born 10th January 1908, they lived at 2 South Moor Street, Hendon, Sunderland.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 19 Pemberton Street, Sunderland, John Nicholason is 35 yrs and a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 35 yrs and their children, Margaret Ann 12 yrs and John Joseph 3 yrs of age.

Commencing 20th November 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private John Nicholson enlisted at Sunderland, he served with the 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry, he died of wounds on 9th May 1916 at the 5th casualty clearing station he is buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension
