Walter Newbold was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of Charles a gas labourer and Elizabeth Newbold née Birkin of 14 Potters Terrace, Northgate, Basford, Nottingham
His father Charles was born in 1863 at Bingham, his mother Elizabeth Ann Birkin was born in 1865 at Eastwood, they were married in 1865 at Basford, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census his parents are living at 14 Potter Terrace, Northgate, Basford, Charles 48 yrs is a gas labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 46 yrs and their children, Sarah Ann 19 yrs a pinafore machinist and Maud 17 yrs a pinafore machinist.
Walter married Eva Isabella Smyth on 7th September 1912 at The Nottingham Registrar office, they lived at 31 High Church Street New Basford Nottingham they had two children, William Albert born 29th August 1913 and Walter born 20th August 1915.
Gunner Walter Newbold enlisted at Nottingham on 5th December 1914, giving his address as 3 Walters Row, High Street, Old Basford, he was 25 yrs and 3 months old, posted to the 71st Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery he landed in France on 28th April 1915.
He was returned to England on 29th August 1918 and discharged from the Army on 23rd December 1918, he was awarded a Silver War Badge no B65183. He died on 23rd June 1902 suffering from Nephritis and was buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
