Reuben Mills was born in 1898 he was the son of Catherine Mills , his mother was born in 1877 at Bulwell, she married George Butcher born 1872 at Beddith, Warwickshire, he was a coal miner hewer, they were married on 4th August 1900 at St Johns Church, Bulwell, they went on to have 7 children sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their survivng children were , Herbert Butcher born 1901 Tom Butcher born 1903, Henry born 1909.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 23 Stafford Avenue Bulwell Nottingham. his step father George Butcher 40 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Catherine Butcher 34 yrs and their children, Herbert Butcher 10 yrs, Tom Butcher, 8 yrs and Henry Butcher 2 yrs of age, also living at the address is John Butcher 27 yrs his step fathers brother he has no occupation.
Private Reuben Mills enlisted at Worksop whilst residing at Bulwell he initally served with the service number 3832 in the Sherwood Forsters Regiment, he was killed in action whilst serving with the 16th battalion Manchester Regiment on 31st July 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
