Arthur William Knight was born in 1888 he was baptised on 4th January 1888 at Emmanuel Church, Nottingham, he was the son of Robert William a plain net mender and Elizabeth Annie Knight née Black.

His father Robert William was born in 1859 at Ironville he died in 1901 aged 42 yrs his mother Elizabeth Annie Black was born in 1861 at Ironville they were married on 25th December 1884 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 44 Caledon Road, Sherwood, Robert William 52 yrs is a plain net mender, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Annie 44 yrs and their 5 children.

Arthur William was the husband of Mary Shawcroft (born 22nd September 1889) of 359, Nottingham Road, Nottingham. His wife, Mary, was known as 'Polly' (see obit). They had one child, a son, Arthur William Halton born 8th March 1918.

Commencing 7th October 1918 hiw widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Gunner Arthur William Knight enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 168th Siege Bty, Royal Garrison Artillery, he died of wounds on 21st March 1918 and is buried in Marteville Communal Cemetery, Attilly (Sp Mem. A.7, buried near this spot).

Arthur's younger brother, Second Lieutenant Albert James Knight MC, Sherwood Foresters, was killed on 2 June 1917.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 5 April 1918: 'Knight. Died of shell wound, March 21st, Gunner Arthur William Knight, husband of Polly (sic) Knight, 159 (sic) Nottingham Road. Wife and baby, Arthur. Age 30. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs RW Knight, 44 Caledon Road, brother of the late Lieutenant AJ Knight MC.'
