Family history

Leonard Holmes was born in 1878 at Hyson Green, he was the son of Albert a lace maker and Emma Holmes née Stones of 8 Rectory Place, Bailey Stree, Old Basford.

His father Albert was born in 1837 at Sherwood he died in 1909 aged 74 yrs, his mother Emma Stone was born in 1839 at Hyson Green, they were married on 19th September 1859 at St Pauls Church Nottingham they had 10 children.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Emma Holmes is 72 yrs and is an old age pensioner, she is living alone at 8 Rectory Place, Bailey Street, Old Basford.

Leonard married Elizabeth Frances Allcock (born born 12th Aprl 1880) they were married on 6th November 1899 at the Nottingham registry office, they lived at 41 Maud Street New Basford Nottingham they had the following children, Connie born 1901, Elizabeth Flojambe born 2nd March 1903, Frederick William born 14th May 1905, Leonard born 1st January 1908, Winifred May born 22nd March 1910, Robert Wilfred born 7th April 1914 and Phyllis born 11th April 1916.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Mount Street, New Basford, Leonard 33 yrs is a lace brass bobbin winder, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Frances 31 yrs and their children, Connie 10 rs, Elizabeth Flojambe 8 yrs, Frederick William 6 yrs Leonard 3 yrs of age and Winnie 1 year old.

Commencing 14th May 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military history

Private Leonard Holmes enlisted on 11th December 1915, giving his address as 41 Maud Street, Nottingham, giving his age as 38 yrs and 1 month, he was a coal miner, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 7th November 1916 and posted to the Army Service, Corps. He died on 11th November 1916 he had commited suicide whilst of unsound mind. He is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
