Family history

William Hesketh was born in 1896 at Manchester he was the son of George a forman gas fitter, and Mary Hesketh née Ashton and the brother of Doris and Percy Hesketh of 956 Ashton Road, Clayton, Manchester

His father George was born in 1869 in Lancashire, his mother Mary Ashton was born in 1873 in Lancashire, they were married in 1895 at Chorlton, Lancashire, they had a further child, Doris born 1904 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Falcon Street Nottingham. George 42 yrs is a forman gas fitter, he is living with hs wife Mary 38 yrs and their children, William 14 yrs a train boy for the Great Central Railway and Doris 7 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Lance Corporal William Hesketh enlisted at Marylebone, Middlesex whilst residing at Nottingham , he served in the 1st Bn Berkshire Regiment he was killed in action on 27th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial (Pier and Face 11 D).

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 21 September 1916: 'Lance Corporal W Hesketh (Berks.) 1 Falcon Street, Sherwood Rise, killed in action July 26th (sic).'
