Family history

Horace Hayes was born in 1896 at Carlton Town near Barnsley he was the son of William a sewing machine worker and later insurance agent and Frances Ann Hayes (née Green). He was the brother of Joseph, Elsie and William Hayes.of 7 Acton Road, Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire.

His father William was born in 1871 at Sutton in Ashfield, he died on 27th November 1918 aged 48 yrs his mother Frances Ann Green was born in 1870 at Kimberley they were married on 27th December 1892 at St Mary's Church Sutton in Asfield, they went onto have 4 children.

In 1901 census the family lived at Outram Street Sutton in Ashfield.

By 1911 they had moved to 346 Highbury Road Bulwell Nottingham, William 40 yrs is an insurace agents assistant, he is living with his wife Frances Ann 41 yrs and their children, Joseph Henry 17 yrs a butchers errand boy, Horace 15 yrs a wholesale confectioners apprentice, Elsie Winifred 9 yrs and William Edmund 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Horace Hayes enlisted at Coalville he served with the 1/6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers he was killed in action on 26th May 1917

His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial Pas de Calais.
