John Hames (junior) was born in 1873 at Beighton, Yorkshire, he was the son of the late John Hames.(senior) a coal miner and Elizabeth Hames née Tuckwood, of Bulwell, Nottingham.
His father John Hames (senior) was born in 1835 at Heanor, he died in 1895 aged 60 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Tuckwood was born in 1837 at Heanor she died in 1900 at Nottingham she was 63 yrs of age, they were married on 10th August 1857 at St Helens Church, Selston, they went on to have 8 children.
John Hames (junior) was the husband of Alice Reavill (born 8th January 1877) they were married in 1903 at Nottingham, and the father of John born 1899 George born 6th July 1905 Genny (Mary Jane) born 25th November 1908, William born 15th August 1910 and Alice born 12th May 1912.Hames. they lived at 4 Adelaide Terrace, Downing Street, Bulwell.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 10 Crown Street, Bulwell, Nottingham John 37 yrs is a miner contractor, he is living with his wife Alice 34 yrs their eldest son, John, was 12, George 6, Jenny 2 and William 7 months. According to information on the census form, John and Alice, who had been married for nine years, had had six children born alive, two of whom had died.
Lance Corporal John Hames enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th Bn Training Reserve. According to UKSDGW he was previously a lance corporal (29712) in the Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra, Princess of Wales' Own) 15th Bn. He died on 19th Septembr 1916 at Woking of 'synopsis' he is buried in Bulwell (St Mary) Churchyard (grave ref. 1914.413).
The personal inscription on the CWGC headstone reads, 'Rest in Peace. Gone but not forgotten'.
