Family history

John Edgar Ellis was born in 1885 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of James a coal miner loader and Mary Ellis of Basford, Nottingham. and the brother of Elizabeth, George and James Ellis.

His father James was born in 1854 at Ruddington,his mother Mary Ellis was born in 1850 at Old Basford, they were married C1878 and went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 11 Delta Street Basford Nottingham. James 57 yrs is a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Mary 61 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 32 yrs a blouse machinist, George 29 yrs a wicker worker, John Edgar 26 yrs a wicker worker and James 24 yrs a wicker worker.

Military history

Private John Egar Ellis enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 10th October 1916, havingno known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
