George Clarke was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Clarke a warehouseman

He married Catherine Ada Cox (born 6th April 1886) on 25th April at St leodegarius Church, Basford, Nottingham, they lived at 1 Frier Terrace, High Street, Old Basford, they had the following children, Eveline born 11th July 1904, Thomas born 4th March 1908, Ethel born 3rd April 1910, Elsie born 28th April 1913 and Walter born 5th May 1915.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 11 Seeley Terrace, High Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, George 30 yrs is a brewery bottler he is living with his wife Ada 25 yrs and heir children, Thomas 3 yrs and Ethel 1 year of age.

Military history

Private George Clarke enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Commemorated : Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
