Frederick Carratt was born on 19th December 1897 at Mexborough,Yorkshire, he was baptised on 18th September 1898 at St Johns church, Mexborough, at this time his parents were living at 17 West Street, Mexborough, he was the son of Edwin a goods gaurd and Sarah Carratt née Frith of 53 Clarges Street Bulwell Nottingham.

His father Edwin was born in 1867 at Great Steeping, Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Frith was born in 1875 at West Ahby, Lincolnshire, they were married on 25th March 1895 at Mexborough parish church, Yorkshire, they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 36 Clarges Street, Bulwell, Edwin 43 yrs is a railway guard, he is living with his wife Sarah 36 yrs and their children, Frederick 13 yrs a scholar, Ernest 9 yrs, Nellie 7 yrs, Walter 4 yrs and Norah 3 yrs of age

Military history

Private Frederick Carratt enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds, 25th March 1918, age 20, at No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station Doullens, France.

Buried : Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France. Plot 5. Row D. Grave 29.

Extra information

His brother Charles Edwin Carratt served wit the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action 16th September 1916.
