Family history

General Bowman was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of the General Joseph Bowman an ostler/groom and the late Charlotte Bowman née Shaw of 31 Egypt Street, Old Basford.

His father General Joseph Bowman was born in 1849 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he died in 1908 aged 58 yrs, his mother Charlotte Shaw was born in 1852 at Nottingham, she died in 1910 also aged 58 yrs, they were married on 27th March 1879 at St Lukes Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census General Bowman had enlisted in to the Army, he was serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he is shown as being 22 yrs, the battalion is in barracks in India.

Military history

General Bowman probably enlisted in late 1906 when he was 18 years old. He was posted to India and the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He did not go to France with the battalion on 4 November 1914 but joined them on 17 December. It is likely he was actually one of the 65 officers and men who arrived on 3rd January 1915. Torrential rain made the communications trenches impassable. Ration parties had to move over ground exposing them to fire fromthe enemy 120 yards away.On 27 January, General was killed and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France.
