John Henry Smith (junior) was born on 4th April 1895, he was baptised on 3rd February 1896 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, he was the son of John Henry (senior) a railway shunter and Violet Smith née Hare of 2 Jubilee Street, Trent Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.
His father John Henry (senior) was born in 1872 at Nottingham, his mother Violet Hare was born in 1873 at Nottingham, they were married on 26th November 1894 at St Marys Church, Sutton in Ashfield they had 3 children.
On 1901 Census he is living with his parents and sister Catherine at 1 Sneinton Square, Alfred Street North, Nottingham. His father was a railway shunter.
On 1911 Census he is living with his widowed mother Violet 38 yrs and sisters Catherine 13 yrs a lace jennier and Doris 8 yrs a scholar at 3 Sneinton Square Alfred Strret South, Nottingham, He is listed as assisting in a tailor's shop and is 15 yrs old.
Gunner John Henry Smith enlisted in June 1915 at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd/1st Nottinghamshire Battery Royal Horse Artillery (T.F)
Possibly posted overseas with the Battery in June 1917, the battery arriving at Basra on 13 August 1917.
He died on 5 Janary 1918 of smallpox and was buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery (Plot XVI Row J Grave 10).
