Family history

John Osborne was born on 22nd October 1890 at Nottingham he was the son of the late William a railway man, Mary Ann Osborne née Dowse later Earp and the brother of Annie, Gertrude, Thomas, Violet, Fred and Margaret Osborne.

His father William was born in 1848 at Kensworth, Hertfordshire, he died in 1899 at Nottingham he was 51 yrs old, his mother Mary Ann Dowse was born in 1858 at Abersychan, Monmouthshire, she died in in 1909 aged 67 yrs, they were married prior to 1877 and went on to have 11 children.

Following the death of his father his mother remarried William Earp in 1903 at Nottingham, he died in 1911 aged 66 yrs.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Atlas Terrece, Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham. Mary Ann Earp 56 yrs is a widow, she s living with her children John 20 yrs single a chemist assistant, Frederick 18 yrs single a painter and decorater and Margaret 15 yrs a hosier.

John married Hilda Annie Croft born 4th November 1892, they were married on 31st May 1916, they lived at 106 Wilford Grove Nottingham.

Commencing 26th March 1917 his widow was granted a weekly pension of 11/-.

Military history

Sergeant John Osborne joined the army reserves on 9th November 1914 at Liverpool giving his age as 24 years and 17 days and his religion as Church of England. He served with the 20th Battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal 8/12/1914. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 7th November 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant on 12/2/1916.

He was killed in action 30th July 1916 at Guillemont, East of Trones Wood. His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
