Family history

William Cliff was born in 1884 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Cliff a police sergeant and Mary Cliff nee Goodwin of 20 High Pavement, Shirehall, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1841 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Goodwin was born in 184 at Bingham, they were married on 21st October 1873 at St Marys Church, Bingham, they had 5 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 20 HighPavement, Shirehall, Nottingham, William 70 yrs a police sergeant he is living with his wife Mary 63 yrs.

He was the husband of Florence Drinkwater (born 28th April 1883) whom he married in 1910 at Nottingham and the father of Dorothy Mabel born 21st February 1913 and William born 7th July 1915 they lived at 14 Frederick Grove, Lenton.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 72 Loughborough Avenue Sneinton Dale Nottingham William 27 yrs is a builders clerk, he is living with his wife Florence 27 yrs and their daughter Dorothy Mabel 1 month old.

Commencing 10th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private William Cliff enlisted at Derby, he initially served with the service number 54827 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he later transferred to the 1/7th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
