Albert Edward Hoffen was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Richard a frame work knitter and Eliza Hoffen née Hallam and the brother of Agnes, Lily, Mabel, John and Harold Hoffen.
His father Richard was born in 1856 at Lambley, his mother Eliza Hallam was born in 1861 at Stapleford, hey were married on 15th February 1880 at St Johns Church, Beeston , they went on to have 9 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Bleasby Street, Sneinton, Nottingham Richard 55 yrs is a frame work knitter he is living with hos wife Eliza 50 yrs and their children, Agnes 20 yrs a lace hand, Lilly 11 yrs, Mabel 6 yrs, John 17 yrs a frame work knitter, Albert 15 yrs an errand boy and Harold 2 months old.
Private Albert Edward Hoffen, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th April 1917. He is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery,(grave ref l.R.22).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 May 1917: 'Hoffen. Killed in action (-), Lance Corporal (sic) Albert Edward, age 20, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Richard Hoffen, 7 Bleasby Street, Sneinton. Mother, father, brothers, sisters.'
